Social Work Values in Practice: Importance of Human Relationships
First Thursdays is an opportunity to learn about social work values that are implemented in the real world. Through the eyes of each month's speaker, students gain an in-depth look at social work careers, how social work values apply, and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a social worker.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Amelia Westbrook, ACSW completed her graduate study in Social Work with a concentration on Children and Families from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She subsequently obtained a certification in Trauma Informed Care at her Alma Mater.
Amelia has worked with vulnerable populations in the Milwaukee area for over 10 years. Her early experiences working in childcare inspired her to pursue a career in Social Work as a way to better support children and families in need.
Amelia currently works for Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan as a Therapist in Training (LSS). In 2019, LSS partnered with Milwaukee Public Schools to provide School Centered Mental Health services to MPS students. Part of this work involved establishing a first-of-its-kind therapeutic program serving students from across the district – The MPS Success Center. The Success Center affords Amelia the opportunity to work directly with children and families in a school-adjacent setting that prioritizes mental health and wellness at school.
